Meet Our October Knowledge Champion

Every day, clinicians around the world open the NYSORA Nerve Blocks App for different reasons.

Every day, clinicians around the world use the NYSORA Nerve Blocks App to review anatomy, check ultrasound landmarks, and prepare for nerve blocks. Others use it to answer the Daily Question and test their knowledge.

For some users, that one question a day has become part of their learning routine.

This October, Dr. Jimmy Tan Jia Heau from Malaysia, an anesthesiologist at Hospital Kuala Lumpur undergoing subspecialty training in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine, reached the top of the leaderboard, becoming our October Knowledge Champion.

One question a day, one habit worth keeping

Dr. Heau has several years of experience in anesthetic management across different surgical specialties. Today, his focus is on developing advanced regional anesthesia skills, ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, and acute pain management.

He first discovered NYSORA through YouTube and now uses the Nerve Blocks App as part of his ongoing learning and clinical preparation.

For Dr. Heau, the most useful features are the regional anesthesia block guides, ultrasound anatomy, and step-by-step techniques. Having the anatomy, probe position, sonoanatomy, and needle approach in one place makes it easier to revisit important details before performing or discussing a block.

He also values the illustrations and ultrasound images, particularly in a field where understanding the relationship between anatomical structures and what appears on the screen is essential.

But there’s another part of the app that has become a daily routine.

The Daily Question.

Dr. Heau describes it as a simple way to maintain continuous learning, with one clinically relevant question each day and detailed explanations that reinforce important concepts while occasionally challenging his understanding of a topic. When a question introduces something unfamiliar, he uses it as an opportunity to go beyond the correct answer, review the underlying evidence, and develop a clearer understanding of the clinical reasoning involved.

This approach, combined with his consistency and genuine interest in regional anesthesia, helped him reach the top of the October rankings.

In his own words:

“What helped me reach the top of the October rankings was mainly consistency and genuine interest in regional anesthesia.”

His subspecialty training gives him an additional reason to keep coming back, as many questions connect directly to the techniques and clinical situations he’s learning about.

But for Dr. Heau, the ranking itself isn’t the biggest reward.

“Reaching the top of the ranking was definitely encouraging, but the most valuable part for me was building a daily learning habit and continuously identifying areas where I could improve.”

And that’s what the Knowledge Champions are really about.

Not simply answering questions correctly or reaching the top of a leaderboard, but making time to revisit what you know, recognize what you don’t, and keep learning.

For clinicians working in busy hospitals, continuous learning doesn’t always require a long study session. Sometimes, it starts with one question, a few minutes of reflection, and the curiosity to look a little deeper.

Congratulations to Dr. Jimmy Tan Jia Heau, our October Knowledge Champion!

And to everyone taking on the Daily Question: see you at the next one.
